Benefits of Owning a Pet

Owning a Pet

hilst it is clear to see how specially trained animals (such as assistance dogs) can benefit their owners, it is perhaps not so obvious to a non-pet owner how amazing normal pets are and how owning one can bring a wealth of benefits and enrichment into your life. Let’s take a look at the benefits of owning a pet and why cats and dogs become a vital member of the family.

One of the best things about having an animal friend in your life is companionship. Pets are always there for you without judging who you are or what you do. They enjoy being looked after and hold unconditional love and loyalty for their owners. They also enjoy having you as a companion as much as, if not more than, you do. They provide companionship for all kinds of different people in different situations, whether it is for a person living on their own or for a family a pet is always there.

Benefits for Children

They can specifically be great companions for children, who may sometimes find it hard to talk to anyone else about how they feel; a child will often talk to their cat or dog about something rather than a human. This is because they see their pets as their peers, rather than just a pet. In addition, children who grow up with pets in and around the household can be less likely to have allergies, asthma and eczema when they are older.

Positives of Routine and Structure

Pets also help to bring added responsibility into your life; most pets have a routine that normally includes feeding times, play times, exercise times and grooming times. The positive reaction that a pet will have to these simple routines can provide a sense of added purpose and well-being; this applies to children tenfold as it shows them how their actions can make another happy.

Great Mood

Having a companion animal around is also extremely positive in that they will always put you in a good mood. It is easy to see why; they are loving, adore you and only want you to be happy. Just stroking a pet can make you feel happy, at peace or calm if you are feeling sad or angry.

Health Benefits

The ability animals have to put you at ease is also great for your health. Many people who are stressed, upset or angry over a period of time can suffer health issues as a result; there is evidence to show that stress can increase the chance of a heart attack. Studies have shown that pet owners suffer less with heart diseases, build ups of cholesterol and plaque in the arteries; whilst a person that has had a heart attack will live for longer if they’ve got a pet. Having a pet, especially a dog, will also make sure that you are participating in some exercise every day. Dogs love to be taken on walks and will often follow you around the house if they are due one. They encourage you to be outdoors and get some fresh air every day by just being themselves.

Pets provide opportunities to meet new people and there are many social events that fellow pet owners can all take part in such as mass dog walks.

If you are ever feeling down, remember; memories, laughter and happiness are all specialist subjects of pets.
